Migos Culture II

Released on January 26, 2018, Culture II by Migos reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart on February 1st, only one week after it’s official release date.  The album is a ninety minutes long, packed with twenty-four songs. To make the Billboard 200, which charts ranks of the most popular albums of the week, you must have the highest rankings in the multi-metric consumption. This includes album sales, track equivalent albums and streaming equivalent albums. Culture II’s No. 1 spots makes them the fifth rap group with more than one album to hit to the Billboard 200 chart, as Culture I, Migos’ prior album, also landed a spot in the No. 1 ranking. They are sitting behind the Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and D12. This album features new sound by the Migos, such as new vocal harmonies, vocoders, guitars, saxophones, Latin rhymes, Pharrel beats and Bob Marley samples, according to Hot New Hip Hop.

According to DJ Durel, executive producer, the Migos did not spend more than forty-five minutes on each song. According to DJ Booth, Durel said the Migos will typically do one song in twenty minutes.

“If they really want to take their time on it, they’ll take 40 or 45 minutes. No more than that,” said Durel to Pigeons & Planes. Some artists prefer taking a much longer time to produce the end product of a record. DJ Durel says he believes the group, comprised of Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff, work best at a fast pace.

“When they’re in the zone, there is no way you can stop them from laying down a good song. It’s going to come out perfect. It’s not going to come out rushed or anything,” says Durel.

Culture II features two tracks that cracked the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100: “MotorSport” featuring Nicki Minaj and Carbi B, and “Stir Fry.” Along with Minaj and Carbi B, the album features Drake, Big Sean, Travis Scott, Ty Dolla $ign, Post Malone, 2 Chainz, 21 Savage, and Gucci Mane.
