BGSU is launching a vaccine incentive program in an attempt to increase the vaccinated population on campus. To be eligible for #VaxBGSU, students, faculty and staff will need to be vaccinated for COVID-19 and voluntarily submit their vaccination status to be entered for weekly prize drawings.
Students can enter by submitting their vaccination status through their MyBGSU portal to be eligible for prizes, including a full tuition scholarship, Starbucks for a year, MacBooks, AirPods and more.
There is no cost to submit a vaccination status. Once the vaccination card is submitted, entrants have the option to pay $10 for Med+Proctor to store their vaccination status permanently. This option is not required by the university or to take part in the incentive program.
After a student submits their vaccination status, they will automatically be entered into the prize drawing.
“Winners each week will be able to let the University know what available prizes for that week they may be interested in. So, if a winner was to win a prize they weren’t interested in, they could then choose another prize that is of interest to them,” Media Strategist Michael Bratton said.
Weekly announcement of winners for the student prizes will begin Wednesday, Aug. 11, and will run through Wednesday, Sept. 29.
Prizes will increase in value each week according to BGSU Chief Health Officer Ben Batey.
"Getting vaccinated is the most effective way to protect the campus community from COVID-19 and as cases rise nationally and in Ohio, everyone must continue to do their part to slow the spread," Batey said. "This incentive program gives us a better understanding of vaccination rates in our community and will help us navigate COVID-19 throughout the fall."
Batey said the university hopes to use the submitted vaccination cards as a way to gauge the vaccinated population on campus.
“We’ve had over 2,000 students use the system and that was before we rolled out the program,” Batey said. “Now, we anticipate we will see a significant increase of students who are utilizing the system.”
Unvaccinated individuals have until Aug. 11 to receive their first dose of the vaccine and submit their vaccination status to be entered for the drawings.
Faculty and staff will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for separate prizes. Additional information regarding faculty and staff will be announced in the coming weeks.
BGSU is encouraging students, faculty and staff who have not yet been vaccinated to do so. Local vaccination sites can be found at vaccines.gov.
